NEW AT YAD VASHEM: THE BOOK OF NAMES

NEW AT YAD VASHEM: THE BOOK OF NAMES

How can a name be commemorated? What can be done to bring life to a name and the story it holds within, even when there is no one to tell that story?

The Book of Names is a new display at Yad Vashem that commemorates 4,800,000 of the men, women and children murdered in the Holocaust, whose names have been gathered and retrieved by Yad Vashem from its inception until the present day.  The Book of Names actualizes the inconceivable number of Holocaust victims, and displays their names together with their dates of birth, hometowns and places of death – where known.

The information is printed on pages two meters high, with the details illuminated by a gentle beam of light that shines from between the pages. The massive dimensions of the Book testify to the enormity of the collective loss for humanity as a whole and for the Jewish people in particular.
The last pages of the book are empty, symbolizing the names that are yet to be retrieved, documented and commemorated.
The Book of Names is open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to turn the pages, to search for names of family members and to remember.

Now on permanent display on the Mount of Remembrance.
