On the nights of the Hebrew month of Elul and approaching the High Holy Days, Jerusalem is clothed in light and holiness. This is a special time to walk the Old City and connect with the Jewish heritage, to hear the sound of the shofar opening the gates of heaven, to be moved by the penitential poems of Selichot, and to discover the picturesque alleys and stone houses of the Jewish Quarter.
Our tour will begin at Jaffa Gate. We will visit King David's Tomb; he sinned and asked for forgiveness, donning sackcloth and ashes and repenting, and left us the 150 Psalms he wrote. We will visit the Jewish Quarter and see the synagogues square and the Roman Cardo, and enjoy a view of the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock.
Finally, we will arrive at the Western Wall Plaza, the site of the Jewish people's longing for hundreds of years, to recite the Selichot.
This is a two-hour walking tour that begins at Jaffa Gate and ends at the Western Wall.
We will return home with a heart pounding from the experience and with great hope that the year and its curses will end, and the year and its blessings will begin; may a good and sweet year open upon us and upon all of Israel, a year of peace and tranquility.
