“Upon Your Walls, O Jerusalem” Walking the Walls – Ramparts Walk, Northern Section
The walls surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem were built in the 16th century at the command of the Ottoman ruler Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. For 400 years Turkish soldiers marched along the path atop the city’s ramparts, patrolling between the gates and guard towers. That path, which was recently renovated and turned into a promenade, is a unique walking route that offers unusual views of Jerusalem inside and outside the walls, overlooking remnants from the past and the development of the present.
The British, who conquered the Holy Land from the Turks in 1917, felt a responsibility for preserving the city’s appearance and established certain standards to help safeguard its special character. Among other things, they decided that the undeveloped valleys surrounding the Old City would remain so, to serve as a green belt that would separate the old from the new. The British instituted regulations that prohibited construction adjacent to or near the walls. This approach was also adopted by Israeli planning authorities and remains in effect today.
Following the War of Independence and the capture of the Old City by the Jordanian Arab Legion, the border between Jordan and Israel was drawn close to the wall. This border divided Jerusalem for a period of 19 years, until the Six Day War. Later on the Old City Ramparts Walk was opened, as well as the Walls Around Jerusalem National Park at the foot of the walls. There are two optional routes for the Ramparts Walk: <a href="https://itraveljerusalem.com/tour/ramparts-walk-southern-section/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The southern route</a>, which begins at the Tower of David and ends at the Dung Gate (see the tour, “Upon your Walls – Southern Section”) and the northern route. From Zion Gate to Jaffa Gate, the route of this self-guided walking tour passes between buildings bearing secrets and historical tales, and touches upon cultures and periods from ancient times to the modern day. One of Jerusalem's best known names is "Zion," which originates in the Bible. Mount Zion, which is known to us today in the southwestern part of the Old City, only received its name in the Middle Ages. The mount is sacred to the traditions of all three major religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Mount Zion was enclosed within the walls of Jerusalem in ancient times, but the Ottoman wall built in the 16th century divided the mount, and its peak remained outside the boundaries of the city.
The Armenian St. James Monastery, located within what is known as the Armenian Quarter, is an impressive and old complex that offers its visitors a journey to the culture of the Armenian people.

Walking the Wall Ramparts Southern Section - Self-Guided Tour

On this self-guided walking tour, follow the path of Jesus who came to Jerusalem on the eve of Passover, accompanied by his disciples. The events that took place during the week following his arrival in the city until his crucifixion and resurrection have become the foundations of the Christian faith.
After eating with his disciples ("the Last Supper") Jesus went to Gethsemane. It is here that he was caught, handed over to the Romans and sentenced to die on the cross. The path Jesus walked from the place of his judgment to the site of his crucifixion is sacred in Christianity and is known as the "Via Dolorosa" - the Way of Suffering. Fourteen stations along this path signify events that are mentioned in the New Testament and later Christian tradition, and various Christian sects emphasize certain traditions and stations over others.
The current route of the Via Dolorosa was set down during the Middle Ages, and it originates with events from the 1st century CE, but their significance for believers crosses the boundaries of time and space.
