The stones are chiseled in a way that is characteristic of the construction during the times of Herod the Great: A stone frame that is chiseled, smoothed, and slightly sunken, whereas the center of the stone protrudes outward. The original height of the Western Wall was about 30 meters, and it was approximately half a kilometer long, with the bedrock of Jerusalem at its foundation.&nbsp;There were fillings and vaults built in the space between the walls and the mountain, on top of which a paved plaza was constructed with a surface area of 144,000m2, equal to the size of 12 soccer fields.&nbsp;From 1948-1967, when Jerusalem was divided between Israel and the Kingdom of Jordan, access to the Wall for Jews was forbidden, so many would make a pilgrimage to King David’s tomb on Mount Zion, where they could observe the Temple Mount from the roof of the structure, in the hope to return once more to pray at the Western Wall. Following the Six-Day War, masses of people flocked to the Jewish Quarter, and especially the Western Wall. A short time thereafter, the homes in the Mughrabi Quarter that were built alongside the Wall were destroyed and a prayer plaza was constructed.

The bell tower on the left was also built during the Crusader period.&nbsp;The church was built in the fourth century by Emperor Constantine, who accepted Christianity and made it the religion of the Roman Empire. The emperor's mother, St. Helena, walked around the Holy Land and identified the sites where the events mentioned in the New Testament occurred. Helena identified this place as the place of 'Golgotha' where Jesus was crucified, and next to it the tomb of Joseph the Mount of Olives, who made it possible for Jesus to be buried after he was removed from the cross.&nbsp;In the 13th century, Muslim families received the responsibility for opening the church and the keys to the church. <h2>Visiting the Temple Mount</h2>The Temple Mount square is supported by four colossal retaining walls, built of huge hewn stones and placed on top of each other. One of these retaining walls is the Western Wall, which is used nowadays for prayer and gathering. &nbsp;The policy for ascending to the Temple Mount is strict, and the main regulations include:<ul><li style="font-weight:400;" aria-level="1">Entry to the mountain is allowed from Sunday to Thursday.</li><li style="font-weight:400;" aria-level="1">During winter time - between 7:00-10:30 and 12:30-13:30.</li><li style="font-weight:400;" aria-level="1">During summer time - between 7:00-11:00 and 13:30-14:30.</li><li style="font-weight:400;" aria-level="1">The Temple Mount is closed to visitors on Fridays, Saturdays, and Muslim holidays. During the month of Ramadan, entry is only permitted in the morning.</li><li style="font-weight:400;" aria-level="1">Entry to the mosques and buildings on the mountain is prohibited, and you can only enter through the Moors' Gate, located in the Western Wall plaza. The mountain on which the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock stand today is the third holiest place in Islam.&nbsp;The Temple Mount plaza is made of stone and is of enormous dimensions - about 140 dunams. In its center stands the Temple, about which the Sages said, "He who has not seen Herod's building has never seen a beautiful building." The extension was built during Herod's time at the end of the first century BC, on which stood the Second Temple, which Herod renovated.&nbsp;According to tradition, King Solomon built the first Temple in this place, and the Babylonian exiles returned and built the second one. Herod renovated the Temple and created an artificial extension of the hill. In the southern part of the extension, Herod built the royal "Staio", a basilica structure with rows of impressive columns used as a gathering secular place.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. The common assumption is that the Temple Mount plaza remained empty and bleak for many years until the Muslim conquest (although it is possible that in the Roman period, a pagan temple stood on the plaza). In 638, Omar Ibn al-Khattab conquered Jerusalem, and Muslim rule began in the city, and in 691, Khalifa Abd al-Malak built the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount plaza. Later, Al-Walid built the Al-Aqsa Mosque.&nbsp;According to the belief of Islam, there was the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which Muhammad reached on a night journey, riding on a beast called Al-Burak. It should be noted that the Temple Mount is identified as the place from which Muhammad ascended to heaven and where he met God and the prophets. For Muslim believers, this is the third holiest place in the world.

<h2>The History and the Spectacular in the Underground World of the Western Wall Tunnels</h2>The entrance to the tunnels is on the northern side of the Western Wall plaza, a few meters away from the Western Wall. Upon entering, visitors walk through a series of rooms moving eastward until they reach the Western Wall. The rooms encountered along the passageway are the remains of a Medieval church, a bridge, luxury rooms from the Second Temple era, residential homes, ancient cisterns, a quarry, a Hasmonean-era aqueduct, &nbsp;and many more archeological discoveries.&nbsp;Visitors can participate in a fascinating tour that takes you through the tiers of the Western Wall that reveal their secrets in the thick depths of the earth and tell the story of ancient Jerusalem. The impressive Tunnels tour begins at the Western Wall plaza and is approximately 75 minutes long. Tours take place in English, too. The Western Wall Tunnels run along the 485-meter length of the Wall and offer a glimpse of the incredible engineering challenges faced by Herod the Great as he embarked on his undertaking to expand the Temple Mount.&nbsp;The Tunnels are, in fact, an underground system that constitutes a continuous chain of history, from the Hasmoneans until today. They were created through a large number of arches, which were built side by side and supported by staircases connecting the city with the Temple Mount. In ancient times, the Tyropoeon Valley ran along the western side of the Temple Mount, separating the Herodian Quarter and the Temple. The need for a bridge above the valley led to the building of the arches. Today, these passageways support the streets, and the tunnels pass directly beneath the Muslim Quarter.&nbsp;The tunnels were first discovered during a dig by British archeologists in the nineteenth century, however, the actual excavations took place after the Six-Day War under the auspices of the Israeli Ministry of Religion. Since the tunnels run along the Western side of the Temple Mount, the site of the Holy of Holies, they reach a point very close to the location of the drinking stone. There is a small synagogue at the site where religious Jews pray and read the Psalms.

On Fridays at noon, a march of Franciscan monks leaves from the first stop of Via Dolorosa, followed by many believers along the way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on the eve of Passover, accompanied by his disciples. Of course there are way more than three markets in the Old City of Jerusalem but when you hear about the “Three Markets” it is specifically referring to three roofed alleys that run parallel to each other, over the Cardo inside the Muslim Quarter. The three markets are:

Spice/Perfume Market - Souk al-Attarine
Goldsmiths’/Jewelry Market - Souk Al Khawajat
The width of the three streets together is the same as that of the Roman-Byzantine Cardo, suggesting that the Cardo was divided into these three narrow, covered streets following the Byzantine Period, perhaps during the early Muslim or Crusader periods, during the reign of Melisende, Queen of Jerusalem. Amusingly, during the Crusader Period, there was also a “street of bad cookery” in Jerusalem.
Alleyways connect the three streets one to the other.
The Butchers’ Street has shops selling meat, vegetables and household items. Spice Street has jewelry, electronics and clothing stores. Many shops along Jewelers’ Street are closed but there are a few selling fabric.

<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Visit the Spectacular Main Street in the Old City</h2>
The cities of the Ancient Roman Empire had a special tradition of decorating main roads with spectacular stone columns. These streets were called "Cardo" and Jerusalem, just like any other Roman city, had a Cardo of its own. This ancient street originates at Damascus Gate in the north, running southwards through the Old City, terminating at Zion Gate.
Evidence for the existence of this ancient Cardo were first found on a mosaic map of Jerusalem. The map was discovered on the floor of a Byzantine church located in Midba town in Moav Mountains. This Midba map served as an ancient graphic source to teach the locals about Jerusalem.
The north side of the Cardo, from Damascus Gate to David Street, was built during the Roman period in Jerusalem. The south side, however, was built in the 6th century, during the times of the Byzantine Empire in Jerusalem, and it extends along the western side of the Jewish Quarter.

<h2 style="text-align: justify;">The Rich History of the Cardo</h2>
Parts of the Cardo were exposed during excavation work between Habbad Street and Hayehudim Street inside the Jewish Quarter. The Cardo consisted of a central open-air passage for animals and carriages, as well as sidewalks for pedestrian use from both sides of the street. A few original stores located on the sidewalks were also found at several sections of the street.
A Byzantine level was discovered by archeologists in the southern side of the Cardo. This level contained beautiful columns which were later restored. Today it is possible to walk along the Cardo just like the ancient Jerusalemites did back in the 6th century. The Crusader's Bazzar, which was built in the 12th century, is now renovated with modern stores selling ancient history.

The Museum of Psalms is a one of kind museum located at the center of <a href="https://itraveljerusalem.com/the-old-city/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the Old City</a>. Ever since the museum opened in 1995, it has been moving forward with a strong mission and a clear vision: to satisfy the growing demand for spiritually inspired art.
The main exhibit displays a collection of 150 paintings based on the Book of Psalms. Each painting portrays one specific psalm at a time (according to the Jewish tradition, the Book of Psalms consists of 150 individual psalms). The artist Moshe Tzvi Halevi Berger painted the series over a period of 15 years. The palette used by Berger consists of only the seven rainbow colors, combining together art and spirituality. The colors represent different virtues of the soul, painted with rich and astonishingly beautiful imagery. Every brushstroke is felt, and the complex and original method of painting immediately captures the eye of the observer. Berger's works are displayed with annotations in a variety of languages that interpret and provide extra information about each painting. Each remark is composed as a song to enrich the spiritual world of the observer.
Moreover, the museum displays another collection of the artist and that is the Sun series. The Sun series comprises 42 paintings that illustrate the Kabbalistic ideas of light, meditation and healing, through various permutations of the motif of the sun. Another truly inspiring exhibit is the Tree of Life series. The artist teaches us about the tree of life which was located next to the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden. Besides being artistically extraordinary, these works manage to create not just a visual experience, but rather a spiritual one. <h2>The Burnt House - A Unique Experience in the Heart of the Old City</h2>The house has been preserved with fire marks still visible. A visit to the burnt house will acquaint you with a unique testimony to the fiery destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Romans 2,000 years ago.Among the myriad findings revealed on the site, you can distinguish stone weights engraved with the name (D)bar Katros, a Roman iron javelin spear, and a severed arm. These and other findings made it possible to produce an exciting and experiential audio-visual presentation describing and illustrating life during the turbulent period just prior to the destruction of the Temple. It attempts to reconstruct the events that occurred in this house at the time of Jerusalem’s destruction.<h2>An Extraordinary Audio-Visual Display</h2>The audio-visual display portrays life at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem at the end of the Second Temple era during 67-70 C.E. Taking into account the story of the archeological findings, as well as the political and social atmosphere of the day as narrated by the scriptures, the presentation weaves a moving and memorable experience.Dilemmas that existed at the time may well be the same dilemmas we face today. The museum invites you on a journey through time - an encounter with a Jerusalem family that lived at the time of the Second Temple and during The Great Revolt: the Katros family, whose house was discovered six meters below the Jewish Quarter. The Quarter cafe serves local food in the Old City's Jewish Quarter. 

Every lunch needs to end with sweets and great Arab coffee and Jafar is the just the place for that. Open for over 70 years, Jafar family makes probably the best Kanafe in the Old city and for sure top 3 of Jerusalem.

Every day approximately 15 trays of Kanafe and other Middle Easter delights are hand made and served warm. So if you are looking for authentic Baklava sweets and coffee this definitely the place to visit.
